Petrol prices fell to 850 Iraqi dinars per litre at most filling stations in Erbil on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The reduction followed a decision by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources. However, prices in Sulaymaniyah remained unchanged at 1,150 dinars per litre.
An Erbil filling station owner said that stations had reduced prices as the government requested. He warned that petrol producers must also follow the decision. Otherwise, filling stations may not be able to continue selling at 850 dinars.
Several stations had temporarily stopped sales. Most others displayed official notices confirming the new price for regular petrol.
Salar Mohammed, head of the inspection committee at Erbil’s Directorate of Oil and Minerals, said inspections would begin across all stations. Any station with available petrol must not charge more than 850 dinars per litre. Authorities will investigate owners who violate the order.
The ministry issued the directive on July 20 to address fuel shortages, lower market prices and reduce pressure on citizens. Before the decision, regular petrol in Erbil had reached 1,400 dinars per litre.
Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw said authorities would enforce the new price from July 21.
Filling stations in Sulaymaniyah have not yet accepted the order. Their spokesperson, Bahman Sheikh Qadir, said stations would comply only if the government supplied petrol to them at 820 dinars per litre. They would then sell it for 850 dinars.
Some station owners in Duhok also expressed concern. However, Duhok’s oil and minerals director said the province would implement the reduction and form a monitoring committee.
Officials said the policy aims to create fairer prices across the Region and protect consumers. The government will continue distributing subsidised petrol at 750 dinars per litre.
