The Kurdistan Regional Government plans to officially launch a new phase of Project Gashanawa before the end of 2026. The programme will provide financing of up to 150 million Iraqi dinars to more than 100 eligible small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is preparing a new, fully digital application system. Entrepreneurs across the Kurdistan Region will submit proposals through the online “Gashanawa Form.” Officials will then review each project through technical and financial assessments.

Gashanawa does not operate as a traditional grant programme. It offers commercial financing to established businesses that show clear and sustainable potential for growth. The government wants these enterprises to expand production, improve productivity and create new jobs.

Applicants must meet several conditions. They must be citizens of the Kurdistan Region and between 21 and 60 years old. Their businesses must operate inside the Region, employ no more than 100 workers and have at least one year of operating experience. Each applicant may submit only one proposal.

The KRG introduced Project Gashanawa in September 2023 to improve access to finance for SMEs. The initiative works with private banks and evaluates the quality of business plans instead of relying mainly on traditional collateral requirements.

Officials say the programme supports the Ninth Cabinet’s wider economic strategy. The government aims to strengthen the private sector, reduce dependence on public employment and diversify the Region’s economy.

Earlier beneficiaries used the financing to purchase equipment, increase production and hire additional workers. These results encouraged the government to expand the project.

Through the new phase, the KRG hopes to support sustainable businesses, encourage entrepreneurship and improve financial inclusion. It also seeks to modernize public services and banking practices. Officials believe stronger SMEs can increase investment, support innovation and build a more resilient economy across the Kurdistan Region.
