Electricity supply in Erbil is expected to return to normal by Wednesday, according to a source at the Erbil General Directorate of Electricity.
The source said several technical problems and a shortage of gas have reduced power generation across the governorate.
Electricity teams are now working to resolve the problems. They aim to increase generation at power stations and restore normal supply levels.
The electricity source identified three main reasons for the current disruption.
First, gas supplies to power generation stations have fallen. The shortage has continued for around three days and has reduced electricity production.
Second, the 132 kV Shamamak transformer suffered a major failure. The repair work has placed additional pressure on other transformers across the network.
As a result, electricity authorities have had to shut down some transformers temporarily. This has increased pressure on the remaining parts of the grid.
Third, three generation units currently provide around 300 megawatts of electricity to areas outside Erbil Governorate.
This arrangement has reduced the amount of electricity available for Erbil residents. At present, Erbil cannot meet around 50% of its electricity demand.
Electricity teams continue to repair damaged equipment and strengthen the network.
Some temporary power cuts also relate to maintenance work on electricity lines. Authorities are replacing transformers and other equipment that require upgrades.
The work also forms part of preparations for the winter season. Electricity demand usually increases during winter as households use more heating and electrical appliances.
Authorities want to improve the network before demand rises further.
The repair of the damaged Shamamak transformer remains a key priority.
Until technicians fully repair the transformer and return it to service, other parts of the Erbil electricity network will continue to face additional pressure.
The electricity directorate expects conditions to improve as repair work progresses. However, the full restoration of supply depends partly on the return of the Shamamak transformer and improvements in gas supplies.
For now, electricity teams continue working to restore generation and stabilize the network across Erbil.
