The Kurdish short film Sea of Hope, directed by Jubrail Abubakr, has won the Special Jury Award at the Veterans Media Festival in the United States. The recognition marks a major achievement for Kurdish cinema on the global stage.

The festival received around 1,600 submissions from 100 countries. Only 80 films were selected for screening. Sea of Hope was the sole entry representing both Kurdistan and Iraq. Its success highlights the growing international presence of Kurdish filmmakers.

Abubakr said the film focuses on the human cost of war. It tells the story through the experiences of civilians affected by conflict. The narrative explores both emotional and physical suffering. It also sheds light on forced displacement and the search for safety.

The film follows people fleeing their homes under extreme conditions. It portrays dangerous migration routes where survival is uncertain. According to the director, the story reflects a struggle for dignity and hope.

Sea of Hope has gained strong momentum in recent months. It has participated in 24 international festivals over five months. During that time, it has won seven awards. These achievements have strengthened its global reputation.

The film had already earned recognition in December 2025. It won Best Film at the New Cinema Film Festival in Amsterdam. That event featured 2,300 films from 110 countries. The earlier win helped bring wider attention to the project.

Abubakr described the film as a voice for those who suffer in silence after war. He emphasized themes of loss, displacement, and resilience. Through its storytelling, the film connects local experiences to global audiences.

With continued international success, Sea of Hope is helping elevate Kurdish cinema. It presents powerful human stories and expands the region’s cultural reach worldwide.
