The Kurdish docudrama 52 Days, which tells the story of the historic Khwa Kurk events, will premiere in Erbil on Wednesday. The film will be screened for the public free of charge.
The 52-minute film, directed by Karman Mustafa, will be shown at Empire Cinema in Erbil at 6:00 p.m. It presents a documentary-style account of the real events surrounding the well-known Khwa Kurk story.
According to Mustafa, the film focuses on the Peshmerga fighters who faced the former Baath regime during the events. He said the film highlights their courage, determination and struggle during the conflict.
Mustafa also explained that the production team used historical sources to develop the film. These sources include one of President Barzani’s historical books and archival video materials. The production also uses artificial intelligence technology in some parts of the film.
Meanwhile, Shakhawan Mustafa, director of the Erbil Cinema and Culture Department, said the screening will remain free for everyone. Visitors will not need to pay an entrance fee.
The organizers have completed preparations for the premiere and expect strong public interest in the film. However, they have also prepared an alternative screening date.
If all seats fill up during Wednesday’s premiere, the department will show the film again the following Wednesday. The second screening will take place at the same time and location.
The project forms part of a wider cultural program in Erbil. The Erbil Cinema and Culture Department, with financial support from the Erbil Governorate, regularly organizes free film screenings.
The weekly program aims to encourage more people to visit cinemas and develop greater public interest in filmmaking. It also gives Kurdish filmmakers an opportunity to present their work to a wider audience.
The premiere of 52 Days adds another local production to Erbil’s growing cultural activities. Through its historical subject, the film also seeks to introduce audiences to an important chapter of Kurdish history through cinema.
