Iraq’s federal government has started supplying daily liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Kurdistan Region following the temporary shutdown of the Khor Mor gas field. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said the measure will continue until gas production resumes and normal operations return.
The KRG Ministry of Natural Resources announced that Iraq’s Ministry of Oil is delivering the required quantities of LPG every day. The temporary arrangement aims to meet household demand and ensure families continue receiving cooking gas without interruption.
According to the ministry, Baghdad and Erbil are working closely together to manage the temporary disruption. Both governments want to prevent shortages while engineers work to restore production at the Khor Mor gas field.
Officials confirmed that LPG deliveries match the Kurdistan Region’s daily domestic needs. The ministry added that the federal government will continue supplying gas until Khor Mor resumes full production.
The announcement follows a joint statement issued by the KRG Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity. The ministries confirmed that Iraq’s Ministry of Oil agreed to provide the Region’s fuel and gas requirements during the current disruption. They also assured residents that household cooking gas remains available across all provinces.
Officials stressed that technical teams continue working to restore gas production as quickly as possible. They also aim to stabilize electricity generation, which depends heavily on natural gas supplied from the Khor Mor field.
The KRG said coordination with Baghdad will continue throughout the recovery period. Officials emphasized that maintaining reliable energy supplies remains a top priority for both governments.
The temporary disruption began after Dana Gas suspended operations at the Khor Mor gas field. The company announced that it had shut down all major production facilities because of credible security threats and worsening regional security conditions.
Dana Gas described the decision as a precaution to protect employees and critical infrastructure. The company said it will closely monitor the security situation before restarting production.
The daily LPG supplies to the Kurdistan Region are expected to prevent a fuel shortage while authorities restore operations at one of the Region’s most important gas fields.
