The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) has launched the Kurdistan Region’s first Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence. The new program marks a major milestone for higher education. It also supports the Kurdistan Region’s vision of building an innovation-driven economy.
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries worldwide. Healthcare, security, finance, manufacturing, and education now depend on AI solutions. As demand grows, universities must prepare graduates with advanced technical skills. AUK designed the program to meet that need.
The first class includes 22 graduate students. Therefore, they have already started practical research under experienced faculty members. The curriculum combines academic study with hands-on projects. Students learn by solving real challenges instead of studying theory alone.
One student is developing an intelligent imaging system. Moreover, the project could help security agencies analyze incidents faster and more accurately. Another student is creating an AI-powered tool for brain tumor diagnosis. The technology aims to support doctors by improving speed and accuracy. These projects show how artificial intelligence can benefit healthcare and public safety.
The master’s program lasts 18 months and covers four academic semesters. During this period, students gain advanced AI knowledge, research experience, and practical skills. Graduates will enter the global technology market with competitive qualifications.
Since opening in 2014, AUK has expanded steadily. The university has graduated 385 students. It now enrolls 935 students across several academic fields. The institution continues to strengthen its role in the Kurdistan Region’s education sector.
The Kurdistan Region’s first Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence also supports broader development goals. The Kurdistan Regional Government continues investing in technology, innovation, and scientific research. Projects such as Erbil’s planned Science Park encourage cooperation between universities, researchers, investors, and private companies.
Technology startups and research centers also play a growing role in economic diversification. They create opportunities for young professionals and attract investment.
The Kurdistan Region’s first Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence demonstrates how education supports economic growth. It will develop skilled AI specialists, strengthen research, and prepare graduates for future industries.
