Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s visit to the United Arab Emirates opened a “new phase of economic integration” between Erbil and Abu Dhabi, said Emirati economist Hilal Al-Jabiri. Analysts see the visit as a major step in strengthening long-term economic and strategic ties.

Additionally, Al-Jabiri said that the visit goes beyond a diplomatic exchange. It shows a deliberate effort to expand cooperation across multiple sectors. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) wants to diversify its economy, and the UAE has emerged as a key partner for this goal.

Therefore, the visit began with high-level meetings in Abu Dhabi. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and Deputy Prime Minister Saif bin Zayed al-Nahyan. They discussed economic cooperation, political stability, and regional security. Both sides agreed to expand partnerships in aviation, real estate, renewable energy, financial technology, food, and agriculture.

Moreover, Al-Jabiri highlighted the long history of the UAE-Kurdistan relationship. He said the ties are built on trust and mutual support. “We have become like brothers and family,” he noted, emphasizing that the partnership goes beyond business deals.

Economic engagement between the UAE and Kurdistan is already strong. Over 120 Emirati companies operate in Erbil, including 15 major conglomerates. Direct investment exceeds $3.3 billion, plus $420 million in joint ventures. These projects have created more than 150,000 jobs in the past four years, supporting both social stability and economic growth.

Al-Jabiri stressed that the partnership delivers tangible results and sustainable development. He said it covers strategic sectors from technology to agriculture. This cooperation also helps Kurdistan reduce dependence on hydrocarbons. “This partnership shows genuine collaboration, reflected in the high number of companies and tourists between our regions,” he said.

The UAE opened its consulate in Erbil in 2012, laying the groundwork for today’s economic ties. The visit signals renewed commitment from both sides to explore new projects, strengthen integration, and build a resilient framework for growth.

With billions invested and hundreds of thousands of jobs created, the Kurdistan-UAE partnership is reshaping the Region’s economy. Analysts view it as a model of cross-border cooperation that promotes stability, progress, and long-term regional development.
