The Kurdistan Region is known for its olive cultivation, often called “green gold.” According to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the region has 1,500 officially registered olive groves and more than 1.5 million olive trees planted.
This year, the Region’s seven olive oil factories have begun purchasing freshly harvested olives from local farmers, signaling the start of the annual olive oil production season. However, adverse weather has sharply reduced this year’s yield.
Farmers report severe losses. One factory owner said, “An olive grove that produced seven tons last year yielded less than 400 kilograms this year.” Similar challenges are occurring across the region and in neighboring countries. Sabir Haji Zahir, an olive grove owner, said, “This year’s harvest is the lowest I have ever seen. What used to be 10 tons may not even reach 500 kilograms this year.”
Despite the decline, local factories remain vital to the agricultural sector and the environment. They encourage residents to plant more olive trees. One licensed factory under the Raparin Independent Administration produces high-quality olive oil without chemical additives. The oil goes through multiple processing stages before reaching markets in the Kurdistan Region.
Rafat Kamal, the factory supervisor from Afrin, attributed his good health to daily consumption of olive oil. “I am 60 years old and in good health because I use olive oil,” he said. “I encourage the people of Kurdistan to use olive oil, as it benefits health. Afrin produces exceptional olive oil.”
The olive sector continues to attract attention due to its economic and environmental importance. Farmers and factory owners remain committed to preserving Kurdistan’s centuries-old olive-growing tradition. They aim to supply the local market with high-quality olive oil, even in challenging years.
This season highlights both the challenges and potential of the Region’s olive industry. With dedication and investment, Kurdistan olive production can recover and thrive in future seasons.
