UAE agricultural projects in Zakho are creating new opportunities for farmers, workers, and investors. Several Emirati companies began operations after recent visits by Kurdish leaders. The projects aim to expand farming capacity, strengthen food security, and increase domestic production.

Abdulrahman Abdullah, spokesman for the General Directorate of Investment in Zakho, confirmed the new investments. He explained that Emirati companies launched large-scale farming projects across the autonomous administration of Zakho with support from Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

One of the main projects covers 1,000 acres of farmland. The investment exceeds four billion and 350 million Iraqi dinars. The project includes the cultivation of wheat, maize, rice, peas, figs, and raspberries. Work began in 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2025.

Abdullah stated that these UAE agricultural projects in Zakho will stimulate the local economy. They will also generate many job opportunities for residents. The projects highlight how foreign investment can support rural communities and modernize farming.

The first harvests already show results. In 2024, farmers produced 600 tonnes of wheat and 27 tonnes of beans. These figures demonstrate the early success of the initiative and its potential to improve food self-sufficiency.

The Kurdistan Regional Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources continue to back the projects. They offer facilities, ease investment procedures, and encourage long-term cooperation. Their strategy focuses on reducing reliance on oil and diversifying revenue sources.

Overall, the UAE agricultural projects in Zakho mark a step toward sustainable development. They strengthen ties with the UAE while helping Kurdistan build a stronger, more resilient agricultural base for the future.
