One of Kurdistan’s busiest transit corridors has undergone a profound transformation. Therefore, the Gopal Highway Project is completely reshaping how people and goods move between Erbil and Duhok. Once notorious for chronic congestion, the modernized route dramatically cuts travel times. According to the KRG, trips that previously took four to five hours now require just one hour and twenty minutes.

Consequently, this 35-kilometer highway directly eases daily travel for commuters, students, and freight operators. The road features international engineering standards, speed enforcement cameras, and upgraded signage. Furthermore, crews are currently constructing the Etit-Ba’adre segment. Once finished, this final section will eliminate remaining bottlenecks to create a continuous expressway.

Beyond faster journeys, the highway serves as a vital economic catalyst. For this reason, predictable logistics lower operating costs for trade and tourism. It also facilitates the swift movement of agricultural products.

Meanwhile, this project anchors a massive infrastructure drive by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s Ninth Cabinet. The administration views modern roads as strategic assets to diversify the economy away from oil reliance.

According to the KRG Department of Media and Information, the state has launched 1,271 road projects. This represents an investment exceeding 5.3 trillion Iraqi dinars (~$4 billion) to build 5,940 kilometers of roads. Specifically, workers have already completed 810 of these projects, which cover 3,055 kilometers. Meanwhile, another 461 projects spanning 2,885 kilometers remain under active implementation.

Additionally, the government has backed these initiatives with 2,747 municipal infrastructure projects worth 3.4 trillion dinars. Ultimately, these targeted investments strengthen public safety, connect rural communities, and solidify the Kurdistan Region’s role as a major regional trade hub.
