The 2026 PUBG Mobile World Cup has begun in Paris, bringing together 32 leading teams from around the world. Kurdish team 721 GS Esports is representing Kurdistan and Iraq while competing for a prize pool of $3.025 million.

The group stage runs from August 6 to 9. Teams are divided into Groups A and B, with 721 GS Esports placed in Group B. Each team plays 12 matches. The top five teams in each group qualify directly for the Grand Finals. Teams finishing from sixth to 13th enter the Survival Stage for another chance to advance.

A team supervisor said reaching the world championship was already a major achievement. Although 721 started with modest points, the players remain hopeful of reaching either the Grand Finals or the Survival Stage.

One challenge has been the required change in gaming devices. The players normally compete on iPhones in Kurdistan. In Paris, tournament sponsorship rules require Android phones, including models from brands such as Samsung, Infinix and GT. The team says the change has affected performance.

Players are also adapting to cameras, large crowds and the pressure of competing on a major international stage.

Team captain Aliko, 18, said esports should no longer be viewed simply as entertainment. He described it as a profession, with salaries, contracts and structured careers similar to traditional sports.

He added that Kurdistan’s esports scene is growing, with teams such as iKurd and Kawan also developing competitive players.

721 faces strong opponents in Group B, including Brazil’s Alpha7 and teams from Korea and Indonesia.

The Survival Stage is scheduled for August 11–12, followed by the Grand Finals from August 14–16. The team hopes to turn its international appearance into a milestone for Kurdish esports.
