The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has bought 332,910 tons of wheat from local farmers. Therefore, the state has already met 86% of its collection target for the 2026 harvest season.

The campaign launched on June 10 across 13 government silos. Consequently, the collection process is steadily approaching its limit. Furthermore, officials expect this year’s yield to be one of the region’s strongest harvests on record. This boom is occurring because favorable weather and expanded government support have heavily boosted production.

According to recent metrics, the regional breakdown of deliveries includes:

  • Sulaimani and Halabja: Farmers delivered 124,673 tons here to lead the region.
  • Erbil: Silos accepted 113,165 tons, though this excludes the Gwer and Kandinawa areas.
  • Duhok: The province delivered 95,071 tons. However, this total excludes the Sheikhan district and adjacent territories under Article 140 of the Constitution.

In addition, the campaign operates under a strict agreement with Baghdad. The federal government agreed to purchase 400,000 tons of KRG-produced wheat for the 2026 season. Specifically, Baghdad established a two-tiered purchasing price structure:

Production StatusAgreed VolumePrice Per Ton
Within Official Plan292,000 tons700,000 IQD (~$535)
Outside Official Plan108,000 tons500,000 IQD (~$382)

Meanwhile, agriculture has become a central pillar of the KRG’s strategy. The government wants to diversify the economy away from oil reliance. For this reason, recent state investments have focused heavily on boosting irrigation. Officials are also modernizing mechanization and expanding storage infrastructure.

Ultimately, ministry officials emphasized that wheat remains a vital strategic crop. They noted that completing the current cycle will secure food supplies. As a result, the program will inject critical liquidity into thousands of local farming families.
