The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has begun constructing the third largest dam in the region in Germiyan. The Bawanur Dam will store 30 million cubic meters of water. This major project is part of the KRG’s strategy to improve water management and energy production across the region.

The Ninth Cabinet of the KRG launched the dam and pond project to reduce environmental risks. It also aims to boost agriculture, fisheries, electricity, tourism, and water supply. Construction has already started, and progress is moving quickly. Officials report that 18% of the work has been completed, keeping the project ahead of schedule.

The Bawanur Dam is being built using modern techniques. Officials plan to finish it by 2028. The project will meet the growing needs of Germiyan and surrounding areas, offering long-term benefits for local communities.

The dam is located in the autonomous administration of Germiyan. It has a budget of 245 billion dinars. The structure will be 880 meters long and 20 meters high. Its reservoir will extend 150 meters from the base. The dam will include nine sluice gates. Four turbines will generate 34 megawatts of electricity.

The dam and surrounding pond areas will protect local communities against floods this year. Once complete, the Bawanur Dam will store 30 million cubic meters of water, support fisheries, promote tourism, and irrigate 40,000 hectares of farmland. It will also increase groundwater recharge and prevent desertification.

The Bawanur Dam is a strategic project has begun for the KRG. It will enhance water management, strengthen energy production, and improve the livelihoods of thousands of residents. Furthermore, the project highlights the KRG’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. It will also create new opportunities for economic growth and help secure the region’s future.
