Authorities in Erbil will restart the distribution of household gas cylinders through a coupon system starting Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Officials expect this step to reduce prices after a sharp increase in recent days and restore stability to the local market.

Gas prices rose significantly across local markets, with a single cylinder reaching between 25,000 and 30,000 Iraqi dinars. A temporary halt in production at the Kormor gas field caused a sudden spike and reduced supply across the region. At the same time, global developments added pressure. Ongoing conflicts and disruptions to key energy routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have affected fuel markets and driven prices upward worldwide.

Salar Mohammed, head of inspection and follow-up at the Erbil Directorate of Oil and Minerals, confirmed the plan. He said authorities will distribute gas cylinders at a subsidized price of 8,500 dinars per cylinder. Officials have secured enough supplies and stored large quantities in depots across the province. Distribution teams will begin work immediately and deliver gas to residents through the coupon system.

Therefore, the government aims to stabilize the market and ensure equal access for all households across urban and rural areas. Officials want to prevent hoarding, stop price manipulation, and protect citizens from unfair financial pressure during this critical period. Inspection teams will monitor markets closely, conduct regular field visits, and take firm and immediate action against any violations.

In conclusion, leaders expect the new system to ease pressure quickly and improve availability. They also anticipate a noticeable drop in commercial gas prices within the next few days. With supply returning to normal levels, market conditions should stabilize, allowing residents to access gas at more affordable and consistent prices across Erbil. Authorities will continue to review the situation and adjust policies if needed to maintain stability and protect consumers.
