Kurdistan’s agricultural sector is witnessing a strong revival. Rice production is expanding across the region. Good rainfall, modern irrigation projects, and government support are driving this growth. As a result, rice is becoming an important export product. The crop is also helping diversify the economy and strengthen food security.

In the Amedi district of Duhok province, farmers have returned to their fields with renewed confidence. Recent years have brought drought and water shortages. However, heavy winter rain and snowfall replenished rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater supplies. These conditions created an excellent environment for rice cultivation.

Government investment has also supported the recovery. Authorities built new irrigation canals and improved water management systems. These projects deliver water more efficiently and reduce waste. They also give farmers greater confidence to expand production.

Farmers in Amedi continue to grow well-known local rice varieties. Therefore, these include Riteke and the traditional Six-Month rice. Consumers value these varieties for their rich aroma, flavor, and quality. Their strong reputation has increased demand in local and international markets.

Rice production in Amedi has grown significantly in recent years. Local processing industries have expanded as well. Rice mills and sesame-processing facilities now support farmers throughout the district. These businesses also create jobs and strengthen rural economies.

Across Duhok province, rice cultivation continues to increase. More land is now dedicated to the crop. Strong yields and growing consumer demand encourage further expansion. Rice remains a key part of daily meals for many families. This makes it both an economic and cultural asset.

The Kurdistan Regional Government views agriculture as a major economic priority. Through export programs and the “Made in Kurdistan” label, local products are reaching global markets. Rice and other agricultural goods are now exported to Europe and North America.

Authorities are also promoting sustainable farming methods. Modern irrigation systems and water-saving techniques help conserve resources. These efforts improve productivity and prepare farmers for future climate challenges.

This season highlights the success of strategic investment and improved infrastructure. Kurdistan’s rice sector is becoming a strong contributor to economic growth, rural prosperity, and long-term food security.
