Eurowings has suspended flights to Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, until August 7, 2026, because of security concerns across the Middle East.
Florian Granzdörfer, the airline’s public relations manager for European Union operations, said that Eurowings had originally planned to resume flights in May. However, continuing security risks forced the company to delay the schedule.
The airline restarted services to Erbil on July 1 but operated only until July 15. After reviewing conditions in Iraq and consulting the Lufthansa Group’s security department, Eurowings decided to suspend the route again until August 7.
Granzdörfer said protecting passengers and employees remains the company’s highest priority. Eurowings continues to monitor regional developments and will only resume services when it considers operations safe.
The airline informed affected passengers about the cancellations and offered compensation or alternative travel arrangements.
During the past three years, Eurowings operated more than 900 flights between Erbil and five German cities: Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Hanover and Berlin. The routes provided an important connection for travellers, families and members of the Kurdish diaspora living in Germany.
The company also confirmed that flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman have remained suspended since March.
Eurowings linked these decisions to the war between Iran and the United States, which began on February 28, 2026. The conflict has increased security risks across the Gulf and the Kurdistan Region, including attacks carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The airline has not confirmed whether flights will definitely resume on August 8. Any decision will depend on a fresh security assessment, regional stability and guidance from the Lufthansa Group.
Passengers should continue checking their bookings and official airline notifications before travelling to the airport.
Airport officials say international and domestic services continue, although schedules may change quickly if security conditions deteriorate again.
