Egg production in Erbil Governorate has reached levels far above local consumption, according to the Director General of Agriculture. Officials say the surplus now supports markets beyond the governorate and reflects rapid growth in the poultry sector.

Hemin Saeed Murad, Director General of Agriculture in Erbil, revealed that farms in the governorate produce more than 13,000 cartons of eggs every day. However, local demand stands at only about 2,500 cartons per day. As a result, Erbil currently produces nearly five times its daily egg requirement.

Murad explained that the large production surplus allows farmers to market eggs to other cities and regions. This steady supply, he added, helps stabilize prices and supports food security.

Moreover, Murad stressed that egg production continues to rise. He pointed to the growing number of licensed poultry projects across the governorate. According to him, investors have expanded farms in recent years due to government support and rising consumer demand.

In addition, Murad announced that a major strategic poultry project is nearing completion. He described the project as rare at the Middle East level. Once operational, it will significantly boost egg and poultry meat production. Officials expect it to strengthen Erbil’s position as a key agricultural hub.

Murad also emphasized the economic benefits of the sector. Poultry projects provide jobs for local workers. They also reduce reliance on imported eggs and poultry products. Therefore, the sector plays an important role in strengthening the local economy.

Furthermore, agricultural authorities continue to monitor quality and production standards. Murad confirmed that officials work closely with farmers to ensure healthy production and market stability.

As production expands, Erbil Governorate aims to meet regional demand while maintaining self-sufficiency. With ongoing investments and strategic projects, officials believe the poultry sector will continue to grow and deliver long-term benefits for both producers and consumers.
