Egg prices in the Kurdistan Region have fallen sharply, with the cost of one carton dropping to 25,000 Iraqi dinars. Officials say the main reason behind the decline is the summer season, which reduces consumer demand.

Earlier in the previous month, one carton of locally produced eggs reached 70,000 dinars. Each carton contains 12 trays. At that time, shops and markets sold one tray for around 7,000 to 7,500 dinars.

Today, prices have fallen significantly. Firas Sadiq, Director of Animal Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, said one carton is now sold at about 45,000 dinars in bulk markets. He explained that one tray now costs around 3,750 dinars.

Retail prices have also dropped in local markets. One tray, which contains 30 eggs, now sells for about 5,000 dinars. This means six eggs cost around 1,000 dinars. Earlier, consumers paid around 1,000 dinars for only four eggs.

Sadiq said seasonal changes play a major role in the price drop. He explained that demand for eggs decreases during summer. He also pointed to the closure of schools as another factor that reduces consumption.

The official confirmed that all eggs in the Kurdistan Region come from local production. He said no imported eggs enter the market because domestic production is sufficient. He also noted that local prices remain lower than those in neighboring countries.

Current production levels are strong. Local farms produce around 20,000 cartons of eggs per day. However, domestic demand stands at only 7,000 cartons daily.

This leaves a surplus of about 13,000 cartons every day. Sadiq said producers export the extra supply to central and southern Iraq.

He added that exports help balance the market and prevent further price drops. Officials say the poultry sector remains stable despite seasonal fluctuations, and they expect prices to adjust again as demand increases in colder months.
