The Directorate General of Agriculture in Duhok reported strong agricultural export activity during the first quarter of 2026. The department exported more than 10,000 tons of locally produced crops to central and southern Iraq, reflecting continued growth in the region’s agricultural sector.
Director General Ahmed Jamil said on Thursday, April 23, 2026, that the exports support farmers and strengthen domestic production. He explained that farmers across Duhok supplied all exported goods, while the agriculture directorate supervised the entire process to ensure proper distribution and compliance with official regulations.
According to official data, total exports reached 10,696 tons over the three months. Potatoes dominated the shipments with 9,109 tons, making them the most significant agricultural product exported from the province. Other exported goods included wheat with 837 tons, onions with 496 tons, tomatoes with 45 tons, grapes with 43 tons, rice with 38 tons, raisins with 36 tons, apples with 24 tons, and pomegranates with 14 tons.
Monthly figures show clear variation in export activity. January recorded the highest volume at 7,181 tons, followed by February with 2,875 tons. March saw a decline to 640 tons. Officials attributed this drop to seasonal harvesting cycles and changes in crop availability during late winter and early spring.
The agriculture directorate managed the export process through 471 official permits. It issued 125 permits in January, 297 in February, and 49 in March, which helped organize shipments and regulate trade flow to Iraqi markets.
In addition, Duhok exported 289,681 tons of agricultural products in 2025. Potatoes alone accounted for 211,906 tons, reinforcing their central role in the province’s agricultural economy and highlighting Duhok’s importance in supplying food across Iraq.
