In the cultural space of Aram Gallery in Sulaymaniyah, a young Kurdish guitarist delivered a deeply expressive performance rooted in the traditions of Spanish flamenco. The concert, held on April 26 under the title “Soli Flamenco,” featured musician Suren Saman, who specializes in flamenco guitar and has dedicated years to mastering its emotional and technical depth.
Saman presented a carefully selected program inspired by legendary Spanish composers, including Paco de Lucía and Vicente Amigo. The performance included pieces such as Soleá, Fandangos, and Farruca, along with Minera, Rondeña, and Roma. He also performed works associated with Sabicas and Moraíto Chico, offering a wide view of flamenco’s expressive range.
Saman explained that Soli Flamenco represents one of the deepest forms of the genre. He described it as the emotional foundation of flamenco music. The term “soli” comes from the Spanish word soledad, meaning solitude. Because of this origin, the style often reflects themes of loneliness, longing, and reflection.
The musician emphasized that this style follows a 12-beat rhythmic structure. It moves at a slower and heavier pace compared to other flamenco forms. As a result, it highlights emotional expression, vocal intensity, and advanced guitar technique. Together, these elements create a powerful listening experience that blends technical precision with deep feeling.
According to Saman, mastering this style requires more than skill. It demands emotional honesty. He noted that great masters like Paco de Lucía and Vicente Amigo shaped the highest standards of this form through their work.
Saman is part of a new generation of musicians in Sulaymaniyah who study and teach flamenco guitar. He runs a specialized music studio focused on this art form. His work reflects the city’s growing cultural diversity and openness to global music traditions.
During the performance, the atmosphere inside the gallery became quiet and immersive. The music filled the space, turning a distant Andalusian tradition into a shared moment in the heart of Kurdistan.
