The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has approved a major electricity project worth nearly 100 billion Iraqi dinars to build three high-voltage power substations in Erbil Province. The project aims to strengthen the electricity network and end long-standing power shortages in several key areas, especially in the growing residential district of Hasarok 8.
The Minister of Electricity and the Governor of Erbil reviewed the implementation stages of the three 132-kV substations. The facilities will be constructed in the areas of Timar, Shamamk, and Hasarok 8. Officials say the project represents a major step in upgrading the region’s power infrastructure.
Hasarok 8 has been identified as a priority location. The district is one of the newest and fastest-growing residential areas in Erbil. Residents there have waited for years for stable public services, especially a reliable electricity supply. The new substation is expected to solve many of these long-standing problems.
Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw confirmed that the Ministry of Electricity will soon sign a contract with the implementing company. He added that construction work will begin immediately after the agreement is finalized. He also stated that the goal is to provide 24-hour electricity across all parts of Erbil Province by mid-year.
The project is part of the wider “Runaki Project,” which aims to eliminate chronic electricity shortages and stabilize the power supply across the Kurdistan Region. It focuses on expanding capacity and reducing pressure on the existing electrical grid.
In addition to residential benefits, the Hasarok 8 substation will also support economic development. It will provide enough capacity for industrial and commercial activities in the area. Previously, the lack of a high-capacity substation created heavy pressure on nearby feeders and caused frequent outages.
Officials say the new infrastructure will improve service delivery, support urban expansion, and strengthen long-term energy stability in Erbil.
