For the first time in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, an innovative farmer in Erbil has successfully grown potato seed tubers locally. He stated that with government support, local farmers will no longer need to travel to the Netherlands to purchase seed potatoes. This change saves time and reduces costs.
Eskandar Gaynji, a model agricultural producer in Erbil, has earned recognition over the years for his dedication to farming. Moreover, after six years of research, testing, and experimentation, he produced high-quality seed tubers this year. This achievement marks a major breakthrough for local agriculture.
Previously, farmers had to import seed tubers from the Netherlands. Local potatoes were primarily grown for consumption. Additionally, Eskandar applied modern cultivation techniques. He prepared the soil carefully, selected strong tubers, and controlled planting conditions to ensure excellent results. He combined two high-yield Dutch varieties and adapted them to local soil and climate.
“The potatoes I produced match our table potatoes in taste and texture. Therefore, they are larger and ideal for planting,” Eskandar explained. “Each tuber weighs about one kilogram, enough to plant a productive crop. If the government continues supporting us, farmers will no longer need to travel abroad each year for seed tubers.”
Therefore, the Kurdistan Region produces roughly 600,000 tons of potatoes annually. This potato production exceeds domestic demand by about 25%. In recent years, farmers exported potatoes to several countries. In 2022, they sent 20,000 tons to Qatar and the UAE. Additionally, in 2023, they exported 16,000 tons to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Amman. In 2024, eight thousand tons went to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Liberia.
Eskandar’s success strengthens local agriculture. It reduces dependence on imports. It also increases economic opportunities for rural communities. Farmers now have more confidence to cultivate potatoes locally. In conclusion, this contributes to Iraq and Kurdistan’s agricultural growth. It ensures long-term sustainability and food self-sufficiency.
