The General Directorate of Water and Sewerage in the Kurdistan Region announced today that it completed the latest round of water fee refunds for residents. Officials warned residents who have not registered their connections or submitted the proper documents by the morning deadline that they will not receive any refund.
The Council of Ministers approved adjustments to the water fee system for households across the region. In major city centers, officials lowered the monthly water fee from 45,000 dinars to 20,000 dinars. For households outside city centers, the fee dropped from 45,000 dinars to 10,000 dinars. Residents had until today to register and take advantage of the reductions before the deadline closes tomorrow.
Ari Ahmed, General Director of Water and Sewerage, stated, “During this four-month refund period, 7,363 residents benefited. Our directorate returned 13 billion 384 million dinars to households that overpaid or qualified for reduced rates.”
He added that before 2021, households that did not subscribe to water services or failed to connect their meters paid 80,000 dinars per month. The directorate fixed the fee at 45,000 dinars per month for eligible households starting in 2021. This adjustment created overpayments that justified the recent refunds.
The water directorate clarified that it processes refunds to correct past overcharges and ensure fairness. Officials urged residents to register their connections promptly and submit any needed documents before the cutoff.
Residents who participated in the program now enjoy lower water costs and clearer billing. The directorate continues monitoring registrations and fee collections to prevent mistakes.
Officials are actively following up with households that have incomplete or missing documentation to ensure everyone eligible receives their refund. They also plan to maintain regular audits to avoid future overcharges and to improve the accuracy of water fee records.
This initiative highlights the regional government’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and efficient public service. By issuing these refunds, the Kurdistan Water Directorate returned significant funds to households, recovered overpaid money, and strengthened public trust.
