The Kurdistan Region is advancing efforts to modernize its public distribution system through the digitization of monthly food ration cards, with over 5.35 million individuals currently benefiting from the program. This transition aims to streamline administrative procedures and improve accessibility for citizens receiving food supplies.

The digital system is set to launch its next phase in the coming week, starting in Sulaimani, Erbil, and Duhok provinces, following its initial implementation in Halabja. The program is designed to enhance efficiency in the distribution of food rations by allowing beneficiaries and food distribution agents to access real-time information on ration entitlements and available items.

One of the key features of the new system is the ability to update family records using national identification documentation. For instance, adding a new family member, such as a child, can now be accomplished digitally using a photograph of the national ID, eliminating the need for in-person visits or lengthy bureaucratic procedures.

This digitization initiative was first introduced by the Iraqi Ministry of Commerce and Industry more than a year ago, reflecting a broader national strategy to improve public service delivery and reduce reliance on manual processes. The Kurdistan Region’s General Directorate of Commerce continues to oversee the rollout and integration of the platform, aiming to fully operationalize the system across all provinces in the near future.
