Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, officially inaugurated the dual-carriage strategic Kasnazan – Gomaspan road in Erbil Province.

Additionally, the new dual road from Kasnazan to Gomaspan stands as one of the key strategic projects of the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Officials, company representatives, and local leaders attended the opening ceremony on Tuesday (24-02-2026).

Therefore, the project marks a major step toward improving transport infrastructure in the region. It strengthens road safety, shortens travel time, and supports economic growth in nearby areas.

Furthermore, Engineer Amir Ahmad, Director of Road Projects at Hemn Group, said each side of the road includes three lanes. The design allocates one lane for emergency use.

Furthermore, he explained that workers eliminated steep slopes and sharp curves along the old route. As a result, drivers can now travel safely at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. The new design reduces the risk of traffic accidents that frequently occurred on the previous road.

Engineers built the road according to high international standards. The project includes:

  • A total length of 16 kilometers
  • An additional 8 kilometers of service roads
  • A width of 10.75 meters on each side
  • Five bridges and one underpass
  • Fifty box culverts to prevent rainwater accumulation
  • Pavement thickness of 21 centimeters formed by three asphalt layers
  • A structure that supports heavy truck loads

Hemn Group completed the project in cooperation with national investor Khalid Khoshnaw.

Therefore, the road connects Erbil city to the Gomaspan junction. It improves access for tourists and traders and boosts commercial and tourism activity in the area.

In addition, the old Kasnazan–Gomaspan road had steep terrain, a narrow single-lane layout, and many sharp curves. Over the years, those conditions caused numerous serious traffic accidents.

As part of its broader infrastructure strategy, the Kurdistan Regional Government expanded the route into a modern dual carriageway.

The project also supports the development of Gomaspan Dam. Officials expect the dam to transform the area into one of the largest tourist destinations in Erbil Province.
