Producers in Akre district of Duhok province shipped Kurdish rice and tahini to the United Kingdom, marking another positive step for agricultural exports from the Kurdistan Region. This shipment reflects growing international demand for locally produced Kurdish agricultural goods and highlights the region’s potential in global markets.

Aras Hamid, owner of Arias Company, which coordinated the shipment, said, “This is the second time this year we have exported our products to Europe. Earlier, we sent a shipment to Germany, and today our rice and tahini reach the UK.” The move demonstrates the increasing confidence of European buyers in the quality of Kurdish agricultural products.

The Akre district, known for its fertile land and favorable climate, has become a key center for rice cultivation and sesame processing. Farmers in the area have reported higher yields this year, thanks to improved irrigation methods and modern agricultural practices. These developments have allowed local producers to meet both domestic demand and international export standards.

Experts say that expanding exports benefits the regional economy by providing farmers with new revenue streams and creating jobs in related sectors, including transportation, packaging, and marketing. “Every shipment sent abroad is not just a sale; it is a step toward sustainable economic growth for the Kurdistan Region,” noted a local agricultural analyst.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has also supported these initiatives by facilitating trade processes and providing technical assistance to farmers. Programs aimed at improving product quality, ensuring proper packaging, and meeting international safety standards have made Kurdish exports more competitive.

With growing exports to the UK and Germany, Kurdish rice and tahini are gradually establishing a reputation in Europe for quality and authenticity. Local producers and exporters are optimistic that these initial successes will pave the way for more frequent shipments and the expansion of other agricultural goods.
