Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, now hosts China’s first Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) Research Center in the Middle East. The center aims to promote dialogue among civilizations and foster cultural understanding across the region.

Officials said that the GCI Center will serve as a platform for exchanging knowledge, encouraging mutual learning, and deepening cooperation among diverse cultures. The center highlights the Kurdistan Region’s role as a hub for international cultural initiatives and global engagement.

Therefore, the Global Civilization Initiative was introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in March 2023. It is part of China’s broader framework, which also includes the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI). These initiatives aim to strengthen international cooperation while promoting peace, sustainability, and shared development.

The GCI Center in Erbil reflects principles outlined in the United Nations Charter. These include unity in diversity, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the sovereign equality of nations. By implementing these principles, the center seeks to create a platform where countries in the Middle East and beyond can exchange ideas, collaborate on cultural projects, and foster mutual respect.

The establishment of the GCI Center in the Kurdistan Region also underlines China’s growing influence in cultural diplomacy. It provides opportunities for academic research, cultural exchange programs, and regional partnerships. The center will host seminars, workshops, and conferences to support intercultural dialogue and understanding.

Officials emphasized that the GCI Center is not only a milestone for China but also a strategic development for the Kurdistan Region. It positions Erbil as a key location for international initiatives that connect civilizations and encourage global cooperation.

By hosting China’s first GCI Center in the Middle East, the Kurdistan Region strengthens its international presence and commitment to cultural dialogue, mutual learning, and peaceful cooperation.
