PM Barzani, Iranian Envoy Discuss Political and Economic Cooperation

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadeq, Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, in Erbil to discuss bilateral relations and key political developments in the country.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the meeting was also attended by Faramerz Asadi, Iran’s Consul General in Erbil. The talks focused on strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran across several fields.

Both sides reviewed the latest political situation in Iraq. They discussed the election of the new Iraqi parliamentary council and the ongoing negotiations among political blocs to form the next federal government. Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of political stability for Iraq and the wider region.

The discussions also covered ways to expand economic, trade, and cultural ties. Officials highlighted the need to deepen cooperation in areas that support growth and mutual interests. Trade relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran remain an important pillar of bilateral ties, especially in border areas.

The two sides stressed the importance of maintaining stable relations based on dialogue and mutual respect. They agreed that continued coordination can help address shared challenges and promote regional security.

Relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran have long been shaped by economic exchange, energy cooperation, and security considerations. Cross-border trade plays a key role in supporting local markets and providing goods and services to both sides.

At the same time, the KRG continues to manage its relations within Iraq’s federal framework. Officials aim to balance regional cooperation with broader national and geopolitical dynamics.

The meeting reflects ongoing diplomatic engagement between Erbil and Tehran. It also highlights shared efforts to strengthen cooperation, support economic development, and contribute to stability in Iraq and the region.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and coordination in the coming period.
