Under cold winter skies, Duhok has turned its evenings into a lively public space. The city has launched the fourth edition of its New Year Night Market. The event runs through New Year’s Eve and continues to draw large crowds every night.
The New Year Night Market has become a key winter event in Duhok province. It no longer serves only as a seasonal attraction. Instead, it now plays an important economic and social role in the region.
The General Directorate of Tourism organized the market in cooperation with the Duhok Chamber of Commerce and Industry. As a result, the event brings together both local and foreign companies in one open venue. In total, 60 companies are taking part this year.
Moreover, the market highlights locally made products. Many participating companies represent Kurdish agricultural and industrial producers. Visitors can find local food, traditional sweets, handicrafts, and consumer goods. Therefore, the market gives producers direct access to customers.
At the same time, the event supports winter tourism in the Kurdistan Region. Families visit the market despite cold weather. They enjoy shopping, food, and social gatherings. In addition, prices remain lower than regular market rates, which attracts more visitors.
Rawand Akreyi, a local resident, said the atmosphere feels warm despite the cold. He praised the focus on local products. He added that the market allows families to spend time together. According to him, the event also presents a positive image of Duhok to visitors.
Similarly, another visitor, Karker Mohammed, stressed the importance of knowing where products come from. He said the market helps people learn about local factories and brands. As a result, consumers gain trust in domestic production.
Vendors also see strong benefits. Salam Ekmaleyi, a business owner, has participated in all four editions. He sells local honey from Barwari Bala, along with walnuts, figs, almonds, and Kurdish raisins. He said the market helps small producers reach more customers every year.
Meanwhile, other vendors target modern tastes. Kamil Rekani operates a fresh coffee stall using products from his own factory. He offers samples and speaks directly with customers. Therefore, buyers can see the quality before purchasing.
Beyond sales, the market creates jobs. Dozens of young people work in security, sales, logistics, and organization. As a result, the event supports youth employment during the winter season.
