Construction of the new wheat silo in Halabja has reached 80 percent completion. Officials say it is a major step toward improving grain storage. The project will strengthen the region’s agricultural sector and help local farmers manage their harvests more efficiently. Farmers in Halabja have long struggled with limited storage, which often caused crop losses and reduced income.
Additionally, Nawzad Sheikh Kamil, Director General of Trade at the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, said work is steady. He added that Halabja’s long-standing shortage of storage facilities will soon end. He explained that the ministry will move wheat to other silos until construction finishes. Kamil stressed that the project reflects the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and improving the agricultural supply chain.
Therefore, the Halabja silo will hold up to 55,000 tons of wheat. This will cover the needs of Halabja and the Shahrizor plain in Sulaimani province. Sheikh Kamil said the facility will motivate farmers to expand wheat cultivation. They will now have secure and adequate storage for their crops. The new infrastructure is expected to encourage investment in farming equipment and modern agricultural practices.
Moreover, Star Mahmood, Director General of Agriculture in Halabja, highlighted the region’s agricultural potential. He said Halabja produces nearly 40,000 tons of wheat annually. Mahmood added that the new silo will reduce post-harvest losses and improve crop management. He noted that better storage will help stabilize wheat prices and support local food security.
Therefore, the project is part of the KRG’s ninth cabinet strategic plans. The Ministry of Trade and Industry funded it through the 2023 budget. The total cost is 27.203 billion dinars. The government allocated 53 acres of land, with the main silo occupying 23 acres. Officials said the project will create temporary construction jobs and long-term roles in silo operations.
Once complete, the silo will significantly enhance food security. It will provide stable support to farmers and reduce losses. The facility will also drive growth in Halabja’s agricultural economy. Officials say the silo ensures the region can meet future wheat needs and strengthens Halabja’s role as a key contributor to Kurdistan’s agriculture.
