The Kurdistan Regional Government has taken a major step to modernize Erbil’s infrastructure. It launched phase two of the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani laid the foundation stone. This moment marks a key milestone in the government’s long-term plan. The project aims to protect water resources, improve public services, and support sustainable development.
During the ceremony, PM Barzani stressed that the government continues to focus on essential infrastructure. He explained that the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant will reduce environmental risks, prevent water pollution, and support healthier communities. He added that the project will strengthen agriculture by making treated water available for irrigation and green spaces.
Moreover, PM Barzani noted that the plant will support several major urban initiatives. These include the Green Belt and the Life Path projects, which aim to expand parks, increase green areas, and improve air quality around the capital. He said that the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant will play a key role in creating a cleaner and more livable city.
Therefore, the project is one of the largest environmental infrastructure programs in the Kurdistan Region. With a budget of $579 million, fully funded by the KRG, it will cover 205 dunams in western Erbil. It will serve the city for up to 30 years and handle 840,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. It will also include 21.9 kilometers of underground pipelines and 5.3 kilometers of pipe jacking technology to avoid road excavation.
Additionally, Phase one will be implemented by Japan’s JICA, while phase two will be carried out by the Kurdistan-based Awzan company. The two-year schedule aims to ensure high standards, reliable operation, and long-term environmental protection.
PM Barzani also highlighted other strategic projects across the region. These include new dams, upgraded water networks, expanded parks, and major road rehabilitation. He affirmed that the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant fits into a broader vision to improve quality of life and deliver modern public services.
