The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has boosted local markets in Duhok by banning imported fruits. This move created high demand for pomegranates, grapes, and apples. Farmers now earn fair prices and enjoy better sales.
The KRG’s Ministry of Agriculture aims to strengthen domestic production. By stopping imports, the government supports local farmers during peak harvest. This seasonal ban ensures that local products reach consumers first.
Duhok’s streets and markets now overflow with fresh and colorful autumn produce. Stalls showcase high-quality pomegranates, grapes, and apples. Shoppers respond eagerly, buying fruits for their superior taste and freshness.
Local farmer Yusuf Nerwayi praised the policy, noting its direct effect on his income. He explained that when local produce ripens, imports are restricted. This guarantees fair pricing and protects farmers’ efforts. He added that domestic fruits outperform imported options in taste and quality.
Sellers also highlighted consumer trust in local produce. Abdulqadir, a market vendor, said customers prefer local fruits because they are fresh, safe, and flavorful. He credited the KRG’s policy for the current market vibrancy.
The seasonal import ban covers multiple crops, including pomegranates, grapes, and apples. Muslih Mohammed, Deputy Director-General of Agriculture in Duhok, explained that the measure supports farmers while balancing consumer needs. Permanent bans exist for products like potatoes, vegetables, eggs, and chicken when local supply exceeds demand.
The policy’s impact is clear: markets thrive, farmers profit, and consumers enjoy quality products. Seasonal bans, combined with targeted festivals, create a strong local agricultural economy.
Duhok’s Barwari Local Products Festival exemplifies this success. The festival now hosts 200 tents and attracts 80,000 visitors. Farmers sell apples, honey, and nuts while celebrating the region’s culture. Festivals also boost tourism and help farmers export products abroad, such as Barwari apples to Qatar.
The KRG’s dual approach—seasonal import bans and local festivals—strengthens domestic agriculture. It ensures fair markets, promotes local culture, and supports farmers economically. The strategy highlights the value of domestic production for both communities and the national economy.
Farmers in Duhok now bring their autumn harvest to ready markets with confidence. The government’s support ensures their hard work achieves fair rewards.
