The Zakho Fountain Project has begun, marking a major step for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. This landmark initiative aims to boost tourism and stimulate the local economy.

The project will cost 13 billion dinars and cover four dunams in Zakho’s central market area. Positioned in front of the Khabur River, the site offers a prime location for both residents and visitors. An underground parking facility will also be built to improve accessibility.

According to project supervisor Zahra Salim, the fountain will reach a height of 40 meters. It will use advanced technology, including laser effects, music, and lighting. She confirmed that the design reflects international standards.

The Zakho Fountain Project has a one-year construction timeline. Local tourism officials expect it to attract more visitors from across Iraq and neighboring countries. Chia Amin, Director General of Tourism in Zakho, highlighted its uniqueness as the first fountain of this scale in the region.

This development continues broader urban upgrades in Zakho. It follows recent improvements to the corniche, the old market, and the historic Zakho Castle. Authorities aim to combine heritage preservation with modern attractions.

Once completed, the fountain will become a cultural and entertainment hub. Tourism experts believe it will enhance Zakho’s image as a must-visit destination in northern Iraq. The Kurdistan Regional Government views it as a strategic investment to strengthen the tourism sector and support local businesses.

The Zakho Fountain Project is expected to deliver both visual appeal and long-term economic benefits, making it a defining feature of the city’s future.
