The local administration in Zakho has launched preparations to implement 24-hour electricity in Zakho. Officials confirmed that several neighborhoods will receive uninterrupted power starting in October.
Zakho has more than 81,000 electricity shareholders. Some already use meters. However, authorities plan to install meters for all remaining shareholders by October. This step will ensure accurate tracking and fair distribution.
The administration will introduce the service in three areas first. Importantly, the rollout begins in underprivileged neighborhoods. Officials aim to extend the service to the entire Zakho area by the end of this year. This phased approach allows better monitoring and gradual integration.
Officials highlighted that Zakho consumes less electricity than other areas. Their investigations revealed disciplined usage across the region. Over the past four years, enforcement teams disconnected more than 3,000 violators due to overconsumption. These actions helped improve the region’s power reliability.
Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Region continues to expand its broader electricity initiative. The Ministry of Electricity reported that 716,000 shareholders—equal to 2.7 million people—now benefit from the 24-hour service. That figure represents nearly 40 percent of the Kurdistan Region’s population.
Each province has made significant progress in this effort. For instance:
- Erbil serves 380,000 shareholders, reaching around 1,458,000 residents.
- Sulaimani covers 257,000 shareholders, supplying nearly 976,500 people.
- Duhok includes 79,000 shareholders, supporting about 288,000 residents.
The plan for 24-hour electricity in Zakho directly supports the Kurdistan Region’s energy strategy. It aligns with the goal of enhancing infrastructure and public services. Local and regional authorities continue to coordinate for smooth execution.
This project not only strengthens energy access but also improves quality of life. With continued oversight, officials expect the service to reach all households on time. As a result, Zakho’s residents will soon experience consistent and reliable electricity.
