The Directorate of Agriculture in Erbil has formally suspended maize cultivation for the current season due to ongoing environmental and resource challenges, particularly the shortage of groundwater and the high water requirements of the crop.
Hemn Sayed Murad, Director General of Agriculture in Erbil, stated that the decision follows a scientific assessment indicating that maize demands substantial water and electricity—resources that are not adequately available this year. While electricity issues may be partially addressed, the water shortage remains a critical obstacle.
In response, the Directorate advises local farmers to focus on alternative crops such as vegetables and fruits, which are less water-intensive and more compatible with the region’s current environmental conditions. The policy aims to protect Erbil’s limited groundwater reserves and support a more sustainable agricultural strategy.
This shift marks a significant step in aligning the region’s agricultural practices with its ecological realities and long-term resource management goals.
