Erbil today hosted the launch of the Middle East Tourism Exhibition (METEX) 2025, the largest international tourism event ever held in the Kurdistan Region. The exhibition reflects the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) strategy to boost tourism and diversify the economy.
Tourism in the region has expanded steadily, now attracting visitors year-round, including in autumn and winter—seasons previously considered off-peak.
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended the opening, emphasizing METEX as a key platform for global engagement. As part of the event, a formal agreement is expected to be signed today, May 6, 2025. However, concerns have been raised regarding associated unofficial parallel actions.
Tourism Board spokesperson Ibrahim Majid stated that the exhibition aims to create bridges between displaced communities and international stakeholders.
METEX 2025 features 150 experts and participants from 20 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, showcasing collaboration and innovation in global tourism.
