The Zakho Independent Administration attracted nearly $400 million in investment during 2025, marking a year of major infrastructure expansion, industrial growth, and rising tourism, local officials said.

Gohdar Shekho, Supervisor of the Zakho Independent Administration, announced that. He described the year as a turning point defined by large-scale service projects and a comprehensive overhaul of road infrastructure.

In his year-end review, Shekho said the investments reached multiple economic sectors. He stressed that the administration aimed to diversify Zakho’s economy beyond traditional activities. According to him, the injected capital boosted both government revenues and household income levels.

A key focus of the report was road development. Shekho compared the district’s current condition with the situation before Zakho became an independent administration in 2021. At that time, about 65 percent of streets were unpaved, and many paved roads were old and badly damaged.

That situation has now changed. Shekho said 90 percent of Zakho’s streets are currently paved. Work continues on the remaining sections, which authorities plan to complete in 2026.

The road upgrades form part of more than 100 service projects implemented under the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. These projects cover water, electricity, education, healthcare, and transportation. Shekho said most projects are complete, while others remain under construction.

Beyond infrastructure, Zakho recorded strong industrial growth. Shekho confirmed the opening of 40 new factories, operating across different sectors. He said these facilities support the government’s goal of expanding local production and creating jobs for young people.

Tourism also played a major role in 2025. Hotels and restaurants are operating at full capacity due to increased visitor numbers, driven in part by local festivals. Shekho said tourism has boosted private-sector revenues and improved Zakho’s visibility as a destination.

The administration also highlighted agricultural development, particularly in legume production. A specialized company is currently operating in Zakho, based on studies showing the district has ideal land for cultivating legumes. The company plans to work directly with farmers and launch a factory soon to market the products.

Shekho said the achievements of 2025 laid a foundation for long-term economic stability. With ongoing projects and new investments planned, the administration views the year as a key stage in Zakho’s broader development strategy.
