The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has completed 810 road and bridge projects since the Ninth Cabinet took office in 2019, marking one of the largest infrastructure programs in the region’s history. The projects form part of a long-term strategy to improve transportation, strengthen economic growth, and connect cities, towns, and rural communities across the Kurdistan Region.
According to official figures, the government invested more than 1.057 trillion Iraqi dinars in road infrastructure between July 2019 and May 2026. The program resulted in the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of 3,055 kilometers of roads, along with new bridges and transport facilities.
The Ministry of Construction and Housing adopted a diversified funding model to support the projects. Financing came from investment budgets, regular ministry allocations, and revenues generated by truck weigh stations. Under the system, 30% of weigh station income returns directly to road maintenance and development projects.
Major strategic projects accounted for the largest share of spending. The government completed 104 large-scale infrastructure projects worth nearly 986 billion dinars. These projects added about 1,600 kilometers of roads and improved connections between key cities and districts.
At the same time, authorities carried out 451 local road maintenance and rehabilitation projects. These initiatives improved transportation in smaller towns and rural areas. The projects covered nearly 600 kilometers of roads and strengthened access to markets and public services.
Another 255 projects received funding through truck weigh station revenues. These projects focused on roads that experience heavy commercial traffic and frequent wear. Together, they added more than 860 kilometers of road improvements across the region.
The government is also continuing work on 227 strategic infrastructure projects. These projects include more than 2,200 kilometers of future roads, highways, tunnels, and transport corridors. Several major developments, including the Koya-Erbil Highway and the Dukan-Chwarqurna Highway, remain under construction.
Officials acknowledged that financial challenges and budget disputes have slowed progress on some projects. Despite these obstacles, construction continues through the use of domestic revenues.
The KRG has also invested heavily in road safety. Authorities installed thousands of traffic signs, road markings, pedestrian crossings, guardrails, and speed-control measures. These improvements aim to reduce accidents and create safer transportation routes.
Officials believe the expanding road network will lower transport costs, encourage investment, support trade, and strengthen economic integration throughout the Kurdistan Region.
