Erbil authorities have begun distributing electronic gas cards to families in camps across the province. The project aims to improve access to subsidized household gas and make distribution more organized.
The Directorate of Oil and Minerals in Erbil launched the program this week. Officials said more than 4,000 families in the camps of Kawergosk, Basirma, and Darashakran will benefit.
Salar Mohammed from the inspection committee confirmed the start of the process. He said distribution first covered the Kawergosk and Basirma camps.
Around 1,200 families in these two camps received or will soon receive their cards. Authorities will begin gas cylinder distribution after completing card registration.
Officials also completed preparations in Darashakran Camp. They plan to distribute over 3,000 electronic cards there. Gas delivery will start within the next two days.
The Directorate said the system will improve transparency. It will also reduce the delays that many camp residents faced before.
Many families previously could not access support. They lacked proper electronic documentation for services. Now, officials issue gas cards based on official residency records. This allows families to receive gas in a structured way.
The government-subsidized gas costs 8,500 Iraqi dinars per cylinder. Officials confirmed that distribution continues across the province.
They also reported strong progress in the wider program. About 80% of households in Erbil province have already received their second gas cylinder in the current cycle.
Erbil hosts nine camps for displaced people and refugees. These include Hasan Sham U2 and U3, Khazer M1, Debaga, Bahrka, Qushtapa, Kawergosk, Darashakran, and Basirma.
According to the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) under the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior, about 856,831 displaced people and refugees currently live in the Kurdistan Region.
Officials expect the electronic gas card system to improve service delivery. They also aim to ensure fair access for all camp residents.
