The Kurdistan Regional Government has returned 3.2 billion Iraqi dinars to citizens through its electricity discount plan.

The Ministry of Electricity announced the refunds on Wednesday. Officials issued the payments through the e-Psula electronic platform. The refunds covered a 20% discount on residential electricity bills for February. The system automatically returned the discounted amount during payment.

This process allowed households to receive refunds quickly without paperwork or office visits. Officials also explained how the credit system works. If the discount exceeded a household’s March bill, the system transferred the remaining amount as credit for future payments.

According to official data, nearly 133,000 households benefited from the program. The government returned a total of 3.2 billion dinars.

On average, each household received around 24,000 dinars. About 20,600 households paid nothing because the discount fully covered their bills.

Officials said the updated pricing model has lowered electricity costs for many families. Around 80% of citizens now pay less than they previously spent on government electricity and private generators.

Lower-income households have seen the biggest savings under the new system.

The discount program is part of the Runaki (Light) Project, launched in November 2024 by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The project aims to deliver 24-hour electricity to all homes and businesses across the Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.

Government figures show that nearly 5.5 million citizens already receive continuous electricity. This represents more than 85% of the population.

Officials say wider electricity coverage has reduced dependence on private generators. It has also improved service stability in many areas. The government says these reforms will modernize the electricity sector and reduce household expenses.

Officials also believe digital services and infrastructure upgrades will support long-term energy sustainability across the Kurdistan Region.
