The Kurdistan Region expects a major increase in tourist arrivals during the New Year holiday. Officials say more than 200,000 tourists will visit the region as preparations reach their final stage.

Preparations began weeks ahead of New Year’s Eve. As in developed countries, the Kurdistan Region prepares every year to welcome the New Year in an organized way. This year, authorities aim to welcome 2026 with large celebrations and strong tourism activity. Cities and towns across the region have been decorated. Public spaces now feature lights, ornaments, and festive displays.

Ibrahim Abdulmajid, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Tourism Board, said the region is ready. He said that authorities have formed special tourism teams in all four provinces and the four independent administrations. These teams will operate under the general administrations.

According to Abdulmajid, the teams will welcome tourists at checkpoints. They will also help tourist groups and provide guidance through licensed tour guides. Their goal is to make entry smooth and organized.

“The Kurdistan Region, through both the public and private sectors, is fully prepared,” Abdulmajid said. “We expect more than 200,000 tourists to visit during the New Year holidays.”

Preparations are taking place on two major levels. The first level involves the public sector. The Tourism Board is coordinating closely with all relevant Kurdistan Regional Government institutions. These include security forces, municipalities, and service departments. All sides are working together as one team to ensure a civilized and hospitable reception for visitors.

The second level focuses on the private sector. The Tourism Board has coordinated with hotel and restaurant associations. It has also worked with tourism companies and private businesses. These groups have received instructions to prepare for the holiday season.

Organizers have planned several New Year activities. The Tourism Board will supervise some events directly, while local authorities and private organizers will manage others in cooperation.

Officials believe these efforts will strengthen the region’s image as a safe and attractive destination. They also expect the New Year season to boost the local economy and tourism sector.
