The United States opened the largest American consulate in the world. The ceremony took place in Erbil and drew senior American and Kurdish officials. The US consulate in Erbil stands as a major symbol of Washington’s long-term commitment to the Kurdistan Region.
Michael Rigas, the US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, led the event. He said the new facility highlights the strength of the relationship. Michael Rigas stressed that the US consulate in Erbil supports America’s security, economic interests, and regional goals. He also said the compound reflects the importance of the Iraq–Kurdistan partnership.
Therefore, the complex sits on a 206,000-square-meter site on the Erbil–Shaqlawa road. A 2019 US military report estimated the cost at $800 million. Construction teams completed major structural work in 2021. During that period, US officials often described the project as one of America’s most significant diplomatic builds.
Additionally, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also delivered remarks. He said the US consulate in Erbil sends a clear political message. He noted that it shows Washington’s trust in the region and its people. President Nechirvan Barzani added that the Kurdish partnership with the United States has lasted more than three decades.
President Barzani also spoke about shared history. He highlighted America’s role before and after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Also, he mentioned joint efforts against ISIS. He said the opening proves that cooperation continues and deepens.
Rigas also underscored security issues. He condemned the recent drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field. He blamed Iran-backed militias for destabilizing the region. Rigas urged Baghdad and Erbil to act together to stop these groups. He said the incident shows the threat they pose.
Rigas added that President Trump favors economic growth. He said the United States supports American companies that want to invest in the Kurdistan Region. He explained that these companies bring advanced technology, better training, and stronger safety standards.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also spoke. He described the new US consulate in Erbil as a structure “rising like a mountain.” He said it reflects the deep bond between the Kurdish people and the United States.
