Canada plans to expand its commercial presence in the Kurdistan Region. The Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry shared this update. The chamber said Canada wants to bring more companies and investors into the growing market.
Kameran Salah Bajgir, deputy head of the chamber, said a Canadian trade team visited Erbil. The team came from the commercial offices of Canada’s embassies in Amman and Baghdad. Both sides discussed new ways to strengthen economic cooperation. They also explored fresh opportunities to boost trade relations.
Additionally, Bajgir said Canada now promotes its private sector more aggressively abroad. He noted that Canadian officials will host a major trade exhibition in Dubai this January. The event will feature many Canadian companies.
“The Canadian Embassy will help traders from the Kurdistan Region join the exhibition,” Bajgir said. “They also asked us to prepare a list of interested companies.”
According to the chamber, Louise Lakey, Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate, outlined Canada’s plans for wider regional engagement. She said many Canadian companies will join two large exhibitions in January and February. Those events will focus on food and health.
Moreover, she said traders from the Kurdistan Region can request support for partnerships with Canadian firms. The consulate will coordinate that support with the Erbil Chamber.
Bajgir said Canada now seeks new commercial destinations because its trade with the United States has slowed. He said Erbil has become a key regional hub. Canada wants to benefit from this position.
“We want more Canadian companies to enter the Kurdistan Region,” he said. “We also want our traders to explore business and investment opportunities in Canada this year.”
He added that both sides continue to develop new support measures for local business owners. He said these measures will help traders who want to work with Canadian companies.
