The push for US companies investing in Kurdistan is gaining new strength. David Tafuri, the head of the US–Kurdistan Business Council, confirmed that Washington is actively encouraging deeper economic engagement. His comments were made during the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) 2025 forum in Duhok, a major gathering that followed Iraq’s recent elections.
Tafuri said the MEPS forum is important because it brings together leaders and decision-makers. This year’s meeting carries even more weight. It is happening at a time when discussions on forming the next government in Baghdad have already begun. He said the constitution must guide all political negotiations. When politicians ignore the constitution, he warned, sectarian tensions increase.
Moreover, Tafuri explained that the new US administration wants to increase economic cooperation. He said officials in Washington are focusing on US companies investing in Kurdistan and across Iraq. They also support the ongoing talks between Erbil and Baghdad, especially on economic issues.
Tafuri highlighted several sectors where American firms are ready to engage. He said US energy companies are already exploring opportunities. Additionally, technology, infrastructure, and agriculture companies are showing interest in entering the Kurdistan Region. This growing interest from US companies investing in Kurdistan is expected to create new jobs and support long-term development.
His message aligns with the broader goals of the Kurdistan Region’s leadership. In a meeting with Tafuri and members of the US–Kurdistan Business Council, President Nechirvan Barzani reaffirmed the Region’s commitment to expanding commercial ties with the United States. He said Kurdistan is ready to assist American investors in all sectors. President Barzani also emphasized that US companies investing in Kurdistan are vital partners in the Region’s economic future.
These discussions took place while MEPS continues to serve as the main platform for post-election talks. Senior KRG officials, including Foreign Relations head Safin Dizayee, said the forum is essential for addressing sensitive political and economic developments. The presence of both Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani shows how central MEPS has become for shaping cooperation, especially on budgets and salaries.
As the forum progresses, the focus remains on stability, partnership, and investment. For the Kurdistan Region, the renewed push for US companies investing in Kurdistan marks a turning point that could bring long-term benefits.
