The Iraqi Ministry of Commerce has announced the commencement of the wheat harvest across the country. The harvest began two weeks ago and is expected to meet or exceed Iraq’s annual requirement of five million tons of wheat.

According to an official statement, government ministries have enhanced wheat production efforts throughout several provinces, including Dhi Qar and Muthanna, while simultaneously organizing storage infrastructure to accommodate the new crop. These efforts include a 24-hour operational cycle to ensure the efficient intake and management of harvested wheat.

Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun confirmed that Iraq plans to procure up to 5.3 million tons of wheat this year, reflecting an increased focus on food security and support for domestic agriculture.

The Ministry has set purchasing prices at 850,000 Iraqi dinars per ton for newly harvested wheat and 800,000 dinars per ton for wheat from previous seasons. This pricing structure is part of a broader initiative to incentivize modern farming techniques and strengthen the nation’s agricultural sector.
