Wheat storage in Kurdistan Region has become an essential support system for local farmers. This year, they delivered large amounts of their harvest to both the government and private companies. As a result, many no longer face the pressure of selling their crops at low market prices.
The Iraqi Ministry of Commerce confirmed that it received 400,000 tons of wheat from farmers across the region. In addition, two local companies, Khoshnaw and Qaywan, collected around 40,000 tons. Therefore, farmers enjoyed more selling options and stronger price stability.
On September 1, 2025, Dr. Mohammed Shukri, head of the KRG Investment Board, spoke about the process. He explained that the companies finished wheat collection in August. Moreover, he emphasized that most farmers already received their payments on time. According to him, the situation improved greatly compared to previous years when delays created frustration and uncertainty.
During the past three years, the system worked smoothly and increased farmer confidence. Instead of worrying about unreliable buyers, they now sell to trusted companies that pay above the market rate. Consequently, agriculture in the region benefits from stability, while farmers feel more secure about their future income. Furthermore, the consistent process has reduced stress and built trust between farmers and buyers.
The Ministry of Commerce also highlighted the importance of silo capacity in sustaining this success. Across the Kurdistan Region, there are 11 silos and six bunkers. Each silo holds about 40,000 tons, except for the larger Erbil facility, which stores more than 60,000 tons. In Sulaimani province, silos operate in Garmian, Chamchamal, Chwarqurna, Piramagrun, and Said Sadiq. Meanwhile, Erbil province hosts silos in Erbil and Qushtapa, while Duhok province manages four silos in Faiza, Sheikhan, Zakho, and Roviya.
At the same time, new storage projects continue to expand capacity. Construction of a silo in Halabja is underway and expected to open next year. Therefore, farmers will soon gain additional storage space, which will ease pressure on existing facilities. Moreover, the new project demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to agricultural development and food security.
Wheat storage in Kurdistan Region is not only about numbers and facilities. Instead, it represents a strategy to protect farmers, secure fair prices, and strengthen confidence in the agricultural sector. With reliable buyers, modern silos, and increasing capacity, farmers now enjoy greater income security and look to the future with optimism.
