The Soran Independent Administration attracts about 1.5 million tourists every year. Local officials released the figure as meteorologists warned of a new snow and rain system expected from Jan. 12 to Jan. 15.

Additionally, Soran has become one of the top winter tourism destinations in the Kurdistan Region. Visitors come from across Iraq and from abroad. Many travel to Mount Korek to enjoy snow-covered landscapes and winter activities.

Therefore, the Soran Tourism Directorate said tourists arrive throughout the year. However, winter brings the highest concentration of visitors. Snowfall and cold weather increase demand during this season.

Local authorities have named Soran the “Capital of Tourism.” This title aligns with the Kurdistan Regional Government prime minister’s plan to expand tourism and promote the region globally. Officials aim to position Soran as a competitive international destination.

Moreover, mount Korek remains the main attraction. Tourists use the cable car to reach the summit. Many describe the ride as one of the most enjoyable experiences in the region. Hotels and recreational facilities report high occupancy during winter weeks.

Tourists from different countries continue to visit the area. Ahmed Shakir, a visitor from Egypt, praised the natural scenery and the region’s security and economic conditions. He said Soran offers a safe and welcoming environment.

Domestic tourism also remains strong. Farah Odaini, a tourist from Baghdad, said she frequently visits Erbil and Mount Korek. She described the area as beautiful and relaxing.

International visitors show growing interest as well. Libaka Tayeb, a tourist from Pakistan, said she traveled to Kurdistan to experience winter weather. She said snow and cold temperatures motivated her visit.

Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Meteorology and Seismology issued a weather alert on Sunday. The department said a new system will reach the region on Monday evening, Jan. 12. Snow and rain will continue until Wednesday night.

Meteorologists expect snow in mountainous areas above 1,000 meters. This includes tourist zones in Soran. On Wednesday, snow may also fall in Sulaymaniyah, Halabja, and Duhok city centers.

Other areas will receive heavy rain. Zakho and Raparin may see continuous drizzle and occasional torrential rainfall. Thunderstorms may also occur.

Winds will strengthen on Tuesday. Speeds may exceed 25 kilometers per hour. Temperatures will drop further on Wednesday.

Officials say winter weather brings challenges and opportunities. While authorities monitor safety conditions, snowfall continues to drive tourism. The season supports Soran’s economy and strengthens its role as a key tourism hub in the Kurdistan Region.
