The Kurdistan Region has the potential to become a leading regional center for software development, according to South Korea’s consul general in Erbil, Seungcheol Lim.

In an interview, Lim highlighted a recent artificial intelligence (AI) event in the region. He described it as clear evidence of the growing skills and ambition of Kurdistan’s youth. Moreover, he said the event marks the beginning of a broader long-term program aimed at strengthening the technology sector.

Additionally, Lim announced a three-month initiative scheduled to run from June to September 2026. The Korean company Ovana will lead the project. The company plans to deliver new AI solutions and mentor young participants. Before the official program starts, organizers will offer introductory AI training courses in March and April. These sessions will take place in cooperation with local organizations, along with several startups. The courses will be open to participants from across the region.

Therefore, Lim explained that the project focuses on six main areas. However, he stressed that the ultimate goal is much bigger. He said the Kurdistan Region can transform into a powerhouse in software development. To support his point, he referred to South Korea’s own experience. South Korea plans to train 200,000 AI specialists domestically and encourage 2,000 experts abroad to return home and contribute to its technology sector.

“The goal is for youth here to work in startups and Korean companies,” Lim said. He added that strong coordination between government institutions, the private sector, and young talent is essential.

The consul also stressed the need for a strategic plan and research institutions to transform Kurdistan’s economy. He pointed to South Korea as an example of how a country can build a strong economic base within a short period.

In addition, Lim announced scholarship opportunities for students, with applications open until February 24, 2026. Applicants can submit forms through the consulate’s official channels, via Apple ID, or through designated websites.

Over the past decade, ties between the Kurdistan Region and South Korea have grown steadily. South Korea has invested in infrastructure, education, and technology projects. Both sides now aim to deepen cooperation and promote technology-driven economic growth. This AI initiative signals a strong step toward making the Kurdistan Region a hub for software and digital innovation in the Middle East.
