The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is taking a major step to expand clean energy by purchasing surplus electricity from citizens and project owners using solar systems. The General Directorate of Electricity in Germiyan recently announced this initiative, which aims to help participants reduce electricity debts while boosting the national power supply.

Under this plan, citizens and businesses can shift from being mere “users” of electricity to becoming producers. This approach not only increases electricity availability in the national grid but also eases the pressure on traditional power stations. Moreover, it allows private owners to generate income by selling the excess electricity produced by their solar systems.

Alan Arkan, spokesperson for Germiyan Electricity, said that: “Citizens can sell their surplus electricity to the national grid, which reduces their electricity bills. They can even use this method to eliminate any outstanding debts to the electricity authorities.”

furthermore, the purchasing surplus electricity program is particularly significant for agricultural and commercial projects outside urban areas. Many of these projects using solar systems already generate more electricity than they consume, but the surplus often went unused. Now, this excess power can become a reliable revenue source while simultaneously supporting the broader electricity network.

Therefore, the KRG’s initiative aligns with its wider clean energy strategy, encouraging citizens to adopt solar systems and actively participate in electricity production. By turning homes and projects into mini power producers, the government hopes to improve energy sustainability, reduce overall electricity costs, and increase public engagement in renewable energy.

This innovative model represents a win-win situation: citizens benefit financially, power stations face less strain, and the national grid receives a steady supply of additional electricity. As the KRG continues to promote renewable energy, such measures are expected to play a key role in shaping a sustainable energy future for the region.
